Jorge's unique food recipes makes them one of the best Mexican food restaurants in Austin.
The Scene When Diana Veloz opened T.G's Jorge's in Austin, Texas, she transported her family recipes from restaurant forays in Midland, Odessa and Amarillo. The result is an inviting, comfortable space, broken up into several intimate dining spaces by bright painted walls and decorated with Mexican ceramics and glassworks. Guests can also retreat to either of the two full bars or an outdoor patio when the weather is balmy.
History Upon opening the Austin store, long time patrons of Casita Jorge's , (owned by Suzi Piaget, ex wife of Jean Pierre) grumbled and mumbled (as is almost always the case) about the subtle and not so subtle changes in the Mexican cuisine. Well, they're not grumbling anymore.
The daughters of George Veloz Sr. of Midland, these girls are a great one-two punch for the biz. Their brother, George II, is their saving grace, contributing to the ownership of the company with his wife Mitsy, both from Amarillo. When Diana decided she was ready to start her own restuarant in Austin, she had no idea what was ahead. The sibling trio have continued the Jorge's tradition of family friendly dining and awesome Margaritas.
About the Food The Veloz sisters have seamlessly blended classic New Mexican style sauces with the more familiar Tex Mex and the result is a boat load of happy campers. They disdain processed cheeses (with the exception of the chile con queso) at Jorge's and have produced a taste component that is very unique in the local Tex Mex genre.
Branching from the Amarillo location, the sisters, with the help of brother George and wife Mitsy Veloz, have fused Mexican, New Mexican and New Age cuisines. Like no other Jorge's in Texas, you will find Vegetarian fare and quirky (girly) combination plates. The best of both the past and modern styles of flavor. The Austinites have embraced their crazy whims and their deliciously fresh meals.
Diana is the restaurants biggest critic, and insists on the best ingredients for her dishes. You'll find organic whole wheat tortillas, hand rolled flour and pressed corn tortillas. The tostadas are 100% stone ground yellow corn and the joining salsa is made with fresh tomatoes, not canned. Be surprised if you don't gain tons of wieght with this food, no preservatives touch these ingredients and only 100% soybean vegetable oil for cooking and frying.
And for you desayuno fans, they dish up some seriously cool traditional Mexican breakfast dishes and you'll even find Pancakes on the menu at Jorges as well. The breakfast tacos are made with their signature hand rolled flour tortilla, larger than the usual Austin breakfast taco. Breakfast "Burrito", to you West Texas fans. Not only can you get great breakfast from open to close, you can enjoy a pancake plate and opt for egg whites.
